Update - While emergency crews continue to deal with disasters around the province, Our provider has been working with other BC Post Secondary institutions, CANARIE, and telecommunications providers to monitor network connectivity, resolve problems, and re-route traffic where possible.

A secondary connection between Surrey and Kelowna has been repaired by a provider that airlifted a splicing crew to the scene.

The Surrey-Kelowna route, currently, is the only network path east inside Canada. Our Internet connection will continue to be slower then normal. There are still one minor, and two major routes left to repair. The major routes each have 10x the capacity of the Surrey-Kelowna route.

Investigating - Many parts of BC's infrastructure have been impacted by the recent weather, including our internet provider.

Both the main and backup internet routes are currently down. Flooding and mudslides have also affected work crews ability to begin repairs.

Why do we still have internet? Our vendor is paying to send our internet traffic though an alternate supplier. But we share this new route with most other post secondary institutions in bc. So much traffic going through a single point, will slow the connection for everyone.

For the time being, VIU will have a slower internet connection, compared to our norm.

Scheduled - What is impacted: VIU IT Ticketing System. Technicians will be working to bring our new ticket system online and migrate data over from the old one.
Level of impact: Service interruption. During the change over, both systems will be offline. Employees will not be able to access their tickets, nor will new ones be generated. Emails to the IT Service Desk will queue up and be processed once the new tool is live. For urgent support needs please call the IT Service Desk.
Timing: Beginning 12pm, Friday, December 3. Finishing at 4pm, Monday, December 6.

Scheduled - What is impacted: VIU Wireless Networks and Global Protect VPN (vpn.viu.ca) Services. We are preforming maintenance on the servers that manage new logins to VIU wireless networks (VIU-Secure, VIU-Guest, Eduroam) and Global Protect VPN.
Level of impact: Possible Service Interruption. There is redundancy in our systems, no impact is planned. If the unexpected occurs, New logins may not connect for up to 1.5 hours during the maintenance window.
Timing: 9am to 10:30am, Friday, November 26.
Preparation: While no outage is expected, if a network connection is critical for your work during the maintenance window we recommend using a VIU Desktop, or connect to the wireless network/VPN before the maintenance window starts.

Scheduled - What is impacted: Employee and Student VIU Desktop and Documents folders/Shared Drives/U Drives. IT is performing a warranty repair to our network storage system that hosts these files and folders.
Level of impact: Possible Service Interruption. There is no planned interruption to these services. However there is a chance Employees and Student may find the above file locations unresponsive for up to 10 seconds, twice during the maintenance window.
Timing: 5pm to 7pm, Thursday, November 25.
Preparation: None required. It is recommended you save your work and logoff at the end of your workday.

Resolved - Power has been restored to the Nanaimo Campus.

BC Hydro has removed a tree that had fallen on powerlines, causing the power outage. After repairing the cables, power was restored to the Power has been restored to the Nanaimo campus and the surrounding area of south Nanaimo.

Investigating - Currently the Nanaimo Campus is experiencing a power outage.

The campus is currently running on Emergency power. BC Hydro is investigating the source of the power outage.

Remote desktop access may not be possible to most computers at this time. Currently VPN and access to network drives are still possible.

Description: All Linux servers are receiving monthly updates and must be restarted.
Preparation: Please close these systems and all applications connected to these systems before 6:00am. Do not use these systems between 6:00am to 7:00am.
