Maintenance: Software Update; Computer Restart Sep 22, 22:00 - Oct 6, 06:30 PDT
What is impacted: Employee and student computers; upgrading software including Windows 7, Oracle Java 8 UPD 144, and Flash player 27.0.0.130.
Level of impact: Computer restart. Installations and restarts will only occur during maintenance windows.
Timing: beginning 10:00 pm to 6:30 am, Friday September 22. Continuing for up to 2 weeks until all computers updated.
Preparation: You must be logged off to receive updates. Please save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. Do not shut down your computer systems or they will not receive the updates. Your system may not update the first night and may update any of the following nights depending on update load.

What is impacted:Files saved in employee U drives
Level of impact: No interruption expected. If you lose access to files in your U drive please contact ithelp@viu.ca.
Timing: 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Monday September 25
Preparation: Save and close any files on your U drive and do not modify them during the change window.

What is impacted: VIU Services including Library Catalog, VIUBlogs, Mediawiki, Meta Project, VIU Contribute websites.
Level of impact: Service Interruption. All services listed will be unavailable for up to 15 minutes during the maintenance window.
Timing: Wednesday, 6:00am to 7:00am
Description: All Linux servers are receiving monthly updates and must be restarted.
Preparation: Please close these systems and all applications connected to these systems before 6:00am. Do not use these systems during the maintenance period.

Services that may be unavailable for up to 15 minutes between 6:00am to 7:00am:

Scheduled - What is impacted: IT Helpdesk Client Ticket Portal: https://ithelp.viu.ca
Level of impact: Service Interruption. Employees will be unable to access the IT Helpdesk Client Portal to check the status of their IT requests during the maintenance window.
Timing: 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Friday September 22
Preparation: None required. If you need to submit an IT Request during the maintenance window please e-mail ithelp@viu.ca. Once the maintenance is complete, an IT request will automatically be created based on your e-mail and you will be e-mailed a ticket number.

Scheduled - What is impacted: Network and internet services for VIU Nanaimo campus; including internet access, access to network files, email, 4 digit dialing, VOIP phones, voice mail, and call flows.
Level of impact: Service interruption. Building 305 3rd floor employee computers and VoIP phones will be unavailable for up to 2 hours during the maintenance window. Network and internet services may be unavailable for other buildings on the Nanaimo campus during the maintenance window.
Timing: 10:00 pm to 12:00 am (midnight), Thursday September 21
Preparation: Complete phone calls, data transfers, email send/receive prior to the maintenance window. Have a cell phone handy in case you need to make a call. Blue emergency phones are available if there is an emergency.

Level of impact: No interruption expected. If you get an error logging in to a VIU computer after the maintenance window please restart your computer and log in one more time. If the error persists please contact ithelp@viu.ca.
Timing: 1:00 pm to 1:30, Thursday September 21.
Preparation: None required. Please save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. You must be logged off to receive updates, do not shut down your computer.

Level of impact: Computer restart. Installations and restarts will only occur during maintenance windows.
Timing: beginning 10:00 pm to 6:30 am, Saturday July 9. Continuing until all computers updated.
Preparation: Software updates can cause computers to restart. We recommend that you save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. Do not shut down your computer systems or they will not receive the updates. Your system may not update the first night and may update any of the following nights depending on update load.

Monitoring - VIU technology services have been restored. Employees and students should now be able to access all technology services including emails, files, computer accounts, and all VIU Administrative Systems including SRS, FRS, and My Student Record.

If you are still unable to access your email or files please restart you system and try again.

Contact the IT Helpdesk if you continue to experience issues after restarting.

Investigating - ALL VIU Campus

Service Interruption - VIU is currently experiencing issues with ALL technology services. Students and employees will be unable to access VIU technology systems including:
- VIU email (including Outlook and Webmail)
- files (share drives and U: drives)
- desktop shortcuts
- computer logins
- wireless (viu-secure, viu-guest, and eduroam)
- access to VIU Administrative Systems including. Student Record System (SRS), Financial Record System (FRS) etc.

Access to the Internet is functional.

Technicians are currently investigating the issue

Resolution time is currently unknown. Next update 11:00 am.
