Scheduled - What is impacted: ALL VIU technology services will be unavailable. This includes (but is not limited to):
• All email including Outlook and Webmail
• All employee and student computers
• All files
• All network connectivity, including WIFI and VPN
• All administrative systems including SRS, FRS, Library, StarGarden
• VIULearn (D2L)
• All student and employee printing
Level of impact: Service Interruption. All VIU technology services will be unavailable during the maintenance.
Timing: Starting 10:00 pm Friday June 23. Services are expected to be restored mid-afternoon on Monday June 26.
Preparation: Save and close your work, then log off or restart your computer prior to 10:00 pm on Friday June 23. You will be unable to access your account, email, files, or VIU internet during this maintenance window. If you require access to any files you will need to save them to a USB drive or other storage device (not your VIU computer account or a VIU computer).
After: Once IT announces that services have been restored, restart your computers prior to logging on. Reconfigure any mobile devices (iPhone, Android phones, tablets) to use email. Some settings are changing. Reconfigure any computers you have set up to use VPN. Some settings are changing. Please review the detailed Instructions that have been posted at https://technology.viu.ca/help/maintenance for mobile devices and VPN.

Update - VIU continues to experience issues with sending/receiving email with @servicecanada.gc.ca email addresses. IT is continuing to work with Shared Services Canada and our internet provider.
Next update Friday June 16, 3:00 pm.

Investigating - Email being sent from @servicecanada.gc.ca email addresses are not being delivered to VIU email accounts. Email being sent to @servicecanada.gc.ca email addresses from VIU email accounts are not being received. The sender (VIU and Service Canada) will get an error email sent to them indicating the message didn’t go through. This has been ongoing since May 18.

We are working with Shared Services Canada and our internet provider to troubleshoot this issue.

Identified - VIU's guest wireless service is still experiencing issues. Users at the VIU Nanaimo campus can now connect to viu-guest. Users at the VIU Cowichan Campus however, are unable to connect to viu-guest.

IT believes they have determined the issue and are working at resolving it. Due to the large IT infrastructure upgrade from Friday June 23 to Monday June 26, we may not have an update on the resolution until late next week (approximately Thursday June 29).

Update - VIU's guest wireless service is still working intermittently. Users may be able to connect to viu-guest but may be unable to load webpages. Reloading the page multiple times sometimes loads the page.

IT is continuing to investigate and we are working with the vendor. A resolution time is still unknown.

Next update Friday June 16, 3:00 pm.

Investigating - We are experiencing issues with VIU's guest wireless service, viu-guest. Guest wireless services have been impacted since Monday June 12.

We are working with the vendor to identify the issue. Next update 3pm.

Scheduled - What is impacted: Employee and student computers; upgrading Microsoft Windows software.
Level of impact: Computer restart. Installations and restarts will only occur during maintenance windows; 10:00 pm to 6:30 am.
Timing: beginning 10:00 pm to 6:30 am, Thursday June 15. Continuing until all computers updated.
Preparation: Software updates can cause computers to restart. We recommend that you save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. Do not shut down your computer systems or they will not receive the updates. Your system may not update the first night and may update any of the following nights depending on update load.

Level of impact: Service interruption. Wireless services at Cowichan campus, Cowichan Trade Centre, and Powell River Campus may be unavailable for periods of 5-10 minutes during the maintenance window.
Timing: 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Thursday June 15.
Preparation: None required.

Scheduled - What is impacted: VIU faculty and students who use the Student Web Folder tool for course work.
Level of impact: Low impact. All existing student web folders will continue to work. Students creating new web folders can follow the updated instructions on the technology website: https://technology.viu.ca/help/web-folder
Timing: 10:00 am, Thursday June 15
Preparation: None required. If you are a faculty member who uses Student Web Folders as part of your course, please have your students create a new Student Web Folder after June 15 and if applicable have the students migrate their data from their old web folder to their new one. Description: All servers are receiving monthly updates and must be restarted.
Preparation: Please close these systems and all applications connected to these systems before 5:00pm. Do not use these systems during the maintenance period.

Services that may be unavailable for up to 15 minutes between 5:00pm to 6:30pm:
- VIU email (including Outlook, webmail and public folders)
- VIULearn online courses (D2L)
- VIU websites (including www2.viu.ca, isweb.viu.ca sites, InVIU, student pay-for-print website, web.viu.ca sites, viuresidences.ca, mala.bc.ca sites, cycec.bc.ca)

Starting this morning, some employees and students were unable to access network resources including files, email, internet, etc. Some people were unable to log on to computers.

We have identified and resolved the issue.

Scheduled - What is impacted: VIU Wireless network access including viu-secure, viu-guest, and eduroam at Cowichan, Cowichan Trade Centre, Powell River and Parksville. Nanaimo campus and Deep Bay are not impacted.
Level of impact: Service Interruption. There will be periods of 5-10 minutes during the maintenance window when employees and students will be unable to use VIU wireless to access VIU network services including email and the internet.
Timing: 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Tuesday June 13.
Preparation: None required. If you need internet access during the maintenance window please use a computer that is connected to the network via network cable.
