Maintenance: Software Update; Computer Restart Apr 13, 22:00 - Apr 29, 06:30 PDT
What is impacted: Employee computers; upgrading security software (Symantec Endpoint Protection).
Level of impact: Computer restart. Installations will only occur during maintenance windows. Employees may be prompted to restart their computers to complete the upgrade.
Timing: beginning 10:00 pm to 6:30 am, Friday April 13. Continuing until all computers updated.
Preparation: Software updates can cause computers to restart. We recommend that you save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. Do not shut down your computer systems or they will not receive the updates. Your system may not update the first night and may update any of the following nights depending on update load.

What is impacted: VIU Employee computer accounts.
Level of impact: No expected impact. If VIU employees see an error message when logging in or logging out please contact the IT Helpdesk at ithelp@viu.ca.
Timing: 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Tuesday May 22.
Preparation: All VIU employees should log off or restart their computers at the end of the work day on Friday, May 18.

What is impacted: VIU Services including Library Catalog, VIUBlogs, Mediawiki, Meta Project, VIU Contribute websites.
Level of impact: Service Interruption. All services listed will be unavailable for up to 15 minutes during the maintenance window.
Timing: Wednesday, 6:00am to 7:00am
Description: All Linux servers are receiving monthly updates and must be restarted.
Preparation: Please close these systems and all applications connected to these systems before 6:00am. Do not use these systems during the maintenance period.

Services that may be unavailable for up to 15 minutes between 6:00am to 7:00am:

Scheduled - What is impacted: Cowichan campus network and internet services including internet access, access to network files, email, 4 digit dialing, VOIP phones, voice mail, and call flows.
Level of impact: Service Interruption. Intermittent network connectivity and internet access during maintenance window.
Timing: 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Sunday May 20.
Preparation: Complete phone calls, data transfers, email send/receive prior to the maintenance window. Have a cell phone handy in case you need to make a call. Blue emergency phones are available if there is an emergency. Please restart your computer Monday morning if you have any issues logging in.

Level of impact: No Interruption Expected.. If students lose access to any of their files, please have them contact the IT Helpdesk at ithelp@viu.ca.
Timing: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Thursday May 17.

Scheduled - What is impacted: Employee and student computers; Software updates including Symantec antivirus 14 and 7Zip
Level of impact: Service Interruption. Computer restart. Installations and restarts may occur during the daytime. Symantec client updates can cause computers to restart. Users will receive a warning with a 5 minute to restart countdown.
Timing: Starting Thursday May 17, continuing until all computers are updated.
Preparation: Software updates can cause computers to restart. We recommend that you save and close your work at the end of every day then log off or restart your computer. Do not shut down your computer systems or they will not receive the updates. Your system may not update the first night and may update any of the following nights depending on update load.

Scheduled - What is impacted: Watershed Share (\\discovery.mala.bc.ca\watershed) is being moved to a new location. Please use the new path moving forward: \\discovery.mala.bc.ca\shares\watershed. Instructions can be found here: https://technology.viu.ca/help/watershed
Level of impact: Service interruption. Watershed will be inaccessible during the maintenance window
Timing: 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm, Sunday May 13
Preparation: Avoid using Watershed during the maintenance window. Any files on watershed will be deleted 2 hours earlier than normal (Sunday at midnight).
